Did you realise?
We're not here to lecture anyone, we're all grown ups but you'd be amazed just how many people we see that despirately need their vision checked or glasses updated.
Even recently, we've seen drivers that are barely able to see the large letters at the top of test chart and yet they refuse to wear glasses. Frustratingly, as Opticians, we cannot stop them from driving and can do little more than advise them and write to their GP. Let's just hope they don't cause a fatal accident . . .
We also see people that have suffered vision loss in one eye a while ago, but they've been too busy to get it checked out. It's possible to reverse the affects of say, a retinal detachment, but only in the first few days, not after 5 weeks . . .
One of the most depressing things we still see are when children come in for their first visit at age ten or older. By this time it's often to late to fully treat abnormalities like an uncorrected prescription or a squint and the child is at high risk of having impaired vision for life. There really is no excuse to not have their vision checked when they start school.
We're also amazed at how many people go to the dentist regularly but haven't been to the Optician for years . . .
We're not like the dentist, there's no risk of pain and many people receive NHS funding which means the Eye Examination is free.
If we accomplish no more this week than for you to book in for an Eye Examination or prompt someone you know to do so, then our job is done.
